Sitting in the statehouse office of Sen. Marc Pacheco recently, BSU student Francesco Hladysz talked about his days in high school and the difficulty of watching his friends go on to further their education.

Professor named Fraser Institute fellow

Dr. Aeon Skoble, chairman of the Philosophy Department, has been named a senior fellow at the Fraser Institute. The Institute said the selection was based in part on Dr. Skoble’s innovative methods of teaching economic key concepts and the philosophy behind markets and voluntary exchange.

"Professor Skoble is one of North America's leading educators in the philosophy of markets. By connecting economics to popular culture, he offers an approachable, engaging perspective for students of all ages," said Jason Clemens, Fraser Institute executive vice-president.

BSU hosted the annual conference of the Massachusetts Mathematics Association of Teacher Educators (MassMATE), which featured a full slate of speakers, workshops, breakout sessions, exhibits and more.

Research Driven

No one could blame Joe Matta, ’13, if a few years ago he would have had a tough time imagining himself attending an Ivy League university. The Bridgewater native and 1999 graduate of Coyle and Cassidy High School in Taunton, was working construction and delivering auto parts in the years before coming to BSU.

However, things changed after Mr. Matta stepped into an organic chemistry class that granted him entry to the world of research. “Suddenly, it all fell into place,” he said.

Onward and Upward

"I’m glad it’s over,” said graduating senior John DeMille. “It was fun while it lasted.” The Pembroke resident and earth science major was one of nearly 1,200 undergraduate students to cross the stage and receive their bachelor’s degrees during the 172nd spring commencement convocation.

Thousands of family and friends of the graduates attended the ceremony, held on the Boyden Quadrangle under sunny skies.

Stonehill College’s new president, Fr. John Denning, has ties to Bridgewater State. The Rhode Island native served as a campus minister at the Catholic Center from 1997 to 2000.
