Despite being in just its second year, Bridgewater State University's STREAMS project has already improved the grades of many first-year students thanks to its initiatives inside and outside the classroom.

STREAMS, which stands for Student Retention Enhancement across Mathematics and Science, aims to help more students graduate with science or mathematics degrees.

Longtime Wellesley resident, Dr. Phyllis Gimbel (education leadership), was elected chairperson of the board of directors and president of the World of Wellesley (WOW), a non-profit organization dedicated to making the town a welcoming and diverse community.

Lauren Rocha, '11, is the first Bridgewater State University student to have a single-authored article, produced through the Adrian Tinsley Program for Undergraduate Research, accepted by a peer-reviewed journal.

"Mirror, Mirror: Gender and Beauty in the Twilight Series," a scholarly analysis of the popular vampire books by Stephenie Meyer, was accepted by Popular Culture Review. Lauren's mentors were Drs.

Honoring Martin Luther King (Multimedia)

Bridgewater State University hosted its 25th annual Martin Luther King Day celebration, where members of the campus and surrounding communities gathered to celebrate the slain civil rights leader and, later in the day, give back to the community.

Each year, the day begins with a breakfast held in Flynn Dining Hall. Keynote speaker and Dr. Martin Luther King Distinguished Service Award recipient was Dr. Charles Desmond, chairman of the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education.

A Step at a Time

Graduate student Alison L'Heureux will combine her passions of running and helping children with autism, when she races in the Boston Marathon in April as a representative of the Doug Flutie Foundation for Autism.

The Uxbridge native is one of 15 people selected nationwide to represent the organization and is expected to collect $5,000 for the cause. To raise funds, she's started a drive on campus and in surrounding communities to collect recyclable cans and bottles for deposit.

Professor Carleton Donchess of the department of accounting and finance co-organized the 2011 Massachusetts Association of Accounting Professors conference, which focused on the nation's proposed International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and technology in the classroom.

NCUR acceptances hit new high

Fifty-seven Bridgewater students have been accepted to present their research at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research. The number represents a new high for the institution.

This year's number represents an acceptance rate of 92 percent, well above the average for the prestigious conference, according to Dr. Jenny Shanahan, director of undergraduate research.
