The Bridgewater Bears football team hit Swenson Field last week, not for a game, but to lead "Kindergarten Kickoff," a day of sports and fun held for kids entering Bridgewater Elementary School.

Nearly 100 players and coaches spent the morning teaching more than 100 children some football skills, such as throwing and kicking the ball, through fun activities. The kids also had the opportunity to create their own touchdown dances and meet Bears' mascot, Bristaco.

Mid-Year Symposium

The Mid-Year Symposium - a showcase of student research and creative work for students in 100- and 200-level courses - will be held Monday, Dec. 10 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. throughout the second floor of the Rondileau Campus Center. Sponsored by the Office of Undergraduate Research, students from all majors are encouraged to participate individually or in groups to present in a variety of formats such as academic poster, formal talk, video, performance, art display or slide presentation.

Civil Air Patrol (CAP) has approved a charter for its newest Senior Squadron at Bridgewater State University. The CAP BSU Squadron will be registered as MA-005, and is the only college-affiliated CAP squadron in New England.

CAP was founded in 1941 as the volunteer civilian auxiliary of the United States Air Force, and its squadrons represent and serve their home community, state, region, and the nation through three primary missions: emergency services, aerospace education, and cadet programs. 

Inside the Piano, Outside the Box

Combining daring programming with an engaging performance style, Barbara Lieurance, a member of piano faculty at BSU, will bring pianistic virtuosity of an entirely new kind to the concert hall. In this program, "Barbara Lieurance: Inside the Piano, Outside the Box," she champions the compositional tour-de-force "Rhapsodies" by C. Curtis-Smith - the first piece ever written for bowed piano - along with a new commission inspired by the Rhapsodies by Canadian composer John Oliver. Other music includes the jazzy Russian virtuosity of Gubaidulina and the beautiful melodies of Brahms.

Dr. Jo-Ann Della Giustina, associate professor and graduate program coordinator of criminal justice, was invited to participate in the Massachusetts Executive Office of Public Safety's conference, "Rethinking Reentry: A Massachusetts Imperative." The goal of the conference was to create tailored, concrete strategies to suport successful reentry of returning citizens after incarceration. It was held in anticipation of Gov. Deval Patrick's statewide Reentry Task Force. Also, Dr.

Dr. Joyce Rain Anderson, assistant professor of English, was the keynote speaker with Lee Farrrow of My Sister's Keeper, at the South Shore Parent Leadership Conference held in Brockton. The presentation was titled "Strengthening Families to Strengthen Communities," and was filed by Brockton cable TV. Dr. Anderson was also elected to a third term as board president of the Brockton Neighborhood Health Center. Melissa Arrighi, who earned her Master of Public Administration in 2001, has been appointed town manager in Plymouth, where she had previously served as assistant town manager. Ms. Arrighi also holds a bachelor's degree from Bridgewater and prior to working in Plymouth, she had bee assistant town manager in Orleans. MPA alumna Athena Mota, G'11, was honored by the New England Business Bulletin as one of the South Coast's "Top Young Professionals Under 40."
