Q and A: Kenia Rivera on Tent City

Senior Kenia Rivera remembers that Monday night vividly, wondering if the tent she was sleeping in would collapse, as heavy rain pounded away at the thin roof. Luckily it stood strong. This happened on what was the first night of Bridgewater State University’s Tent City, organized each November by the university’s student-run Social Justice League to raise awareness about homelessness.

As part of the Children's Physical Developmental Clinic Guest Lecturer Series, Jeff Migliozzi, a teacher at Perkins School for the Blind, shares his perspective on his own blindness and overcoming challenges of everyday life. Mr. Migliozzi also talks to the crowd of education students about Perkins, where he's been for more than two decades, and content in the school's core curriculum other schools should consider for special needs students.

Guest Speaker Talks Environment, Literature

Guest speaker Karen Thornber, associate professor of humanities at Harvard University, delivered a talk for campus and community members, titled, "Illusions and Delusions: Misperceiving Damaged Environments in East Asian Literatures," in Burnell Hall. Her talk was part of the Asian Studies Distinguished Lecture Series.

Professor Thornber's teaching and scholarly work focuses on the literature and culture of East Asia (China, Japan, Korea and Taiwan), as well as diasporas, environment, gender, revolution, medicine, post-colonialism.

Jazz Band Concert

Bridgewater State University Jazz Bands will perform in Boyden Hall's Horace Mann Auditorium from 8 to 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 20. The bands will perform selections from Duke Ellington, Thad Jones and Gordon Goodwin.

Webinar Scheduled

A Webinar about evening degree-completion programs offered at Bridgewater State University will be held Tuesday, Dec. 4 at 6:30 p.m. The virtual program brings the convenience of the information session to a computer, tablet or mobile device. Delivered via the Web through a video and audio presentation, the Webinar will cover the university's bachelor's degree completion programs offered in the evening, facts and figures about Bridgewater, the admissions process for evening students, transfer tips and tricks and more.

Path to Diplomacy

This week, the U.S. departments of state and education are sponsoring International Education Week. Among the programs planned at the university was a presentation by BSU Diplomat-in-Residence Kathleen Reddy-Smith, who spoke to a local women's group about the challenges of a career in foreign service.

Native American Speaker Shares Culture

Larry Spotted Crow Mann, a cultural eductator for and member of the Nipmuc tribe of Massachusetts, shared with the campus community his tribe's history and culture, which includes quite a bit of music.

Mr. Mann is drum keeper of the Quabbin Lake Singers, a group that shares the culture and music of the Nipmuc people at schools, colleges, powwows and other events throughout the United States and Canada. He's also appeared in movies about Native Americans, including "We Shall Remain," produced by PBS.

Professor's social work paper published

An article by Associate Professor Emily Douglas (social work) was published in the Journal of Public Child Welfare (Vol. 6, issue 5). The paper, "Child Welfare Workers' Training, Knowledge, and Practice Concerns Regarding Child Maltreatment Fatalities: An Exploratory, Multi-State Analysis" centers on child welfare professionals as agents of prevention for maltreatment fatalities. It presents results from studying 426 child welfare workers and reveals deficits in knowledge of parent and household risk factors, among other things.

Professor on anthropology panel

Dr. Curtiss Hoffman (anthropology) attended the annual meeting of the New England Antiquities Research Association, where he participated in a panel discussion, "Across Before Columbus, 20 Years Later," which centered on new evidence of trans-oceanic contact with Native Americans before the Columbus voyage. Additionally, the professor conducted a tour of the Robbins Museum and the Middleborough Little League site for conference attendees.

Art professor in exhibit

The works of Professor Mary Dondero (art) were included in the art exhibit, "Nature Vive and Nature Morte," displayed at the Trustman Art Gallery at Simmons College from Oct. 9 - Nov. 8. The other artists with works on display were: Constanze Kirmse, Mary O'Malley and Brenda Star. Prof. Dondero presented two bodies of work, flower photographs and ink paintings.
