Lecture on Turkish Art Held

Professor Henry Glassie of Indiana University-Bloomington delivered a lecture, “Tradition and Creativity in Turkey Today.” The event was held in the Conant Auditorium and featured an informative PowerPoint presentation. Professor Yasar Ozan Say served as moderator, and BSU’s Dr. Jabbar Al-Obaidi offered welcoming remarks.

The distinguished lecture was sponsored by the Anthropology Department and the Center for Middle East Studies.

Alumna earns industry honor

Heather Murphy, ’06, revenue manager for Red Jacket Resorts, has been awarded the 2013 Stevan Porter Emerging Hospitality Leader of the Year Award by the Massachusetts Lodging Association. The honor was bestowed at the association’s annual meeting in Boston.

Faculty member’s ‘art book’ exhibited

Margaret Bellafiore, a visiting lecturer in the Art Department, is exhibiting her artist book, "First Aid," at the San Francisco Center for the Book, as part of Al Mutanabbi Street Starts Here project. The exhibition runs through May 11. The project is an international response of book artists to the bombing of the street of booksellers in Baghdad in 2007. More information is at sfcb.org.

Social work paper published

Emily Douglas (social work) published “Child Welfare Workers Who Experience the Death of a Child Client” in Administration in Social Work. President Dana Mohler-Faria and Dr. Patrick Faber, minister of education in Belize, have outlined an agreement that renews the long-standing educational partnership between the university and the Central American republic.
The agreement, to be signed with officials from the University of Belize, will include collaboration on student and faculty exchanges, research opportunities, and study tours.

News & Events

A panel of distinguished career diplomats explored topics ranging from the United States’ relations with China, North Korea, Iran and Israel, to emerging issues in Africa. The discussion marked the inaugural John Quincy Adams Foreign Affairs Distinguished Speaker Series, sponsored by the university and its Dr. Edward W. Minnock Center for International Engagement.

Film Viewing and Discussion

The independently produced documentary "Souls of Zen: Buddhism, Ancestors and the 2011 Tsunami in Japan" will be viewed and discussed on Monday, March 18 in the Moakley Center Auditorium starting at 2 p.m. The film presents perspectives on Buddhism in the midst of Japan's recovery from the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disasters. A discussion by Joshua Irizarry, a member of the Department of Anthropology faculty, will follow the viewing. The event, co-hosted by the anthropology department and the Asian Studies Program, is open to the campus community and the general public.

Adams Distinguished Speaker

Razia Jan, founder of the Kabuli Education Center in Afghanistan and one of CNN's 2012 Top 10 Heroes, is the next featured speaker in the John Quincy Adams Foreign Affairs Distinguished Speaker Series. Her talk, "Breaking Down Barriers: Educating Girls in Afghanistan," will be held Wednesday, March 6 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Lecture Hall of the Center for Science & Mathematics at Bridgewater State University. The speaker series, sponsored by the Minnock Center for International Engagement, is open to the BSU community and the public.
