First Ever Legislative Reception Held

From outside the Edward W. Minnock Center for International Engagement, BSU’s first ever Legislative Reception may have looked like a formal, invitation-only event, as a number of local officials mingled with a crowd of campus constituents. However, the reception was exactly the opposite: it was an open event for the entire campus community designed to connect all BSU students with local legislators.

Michael Dukakis talks to the BSU community about how the U.S. Constitution fares in today's political atmosphere. Using the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) and Citizens United decisions as measuring tools, the former Massachusetts governor explains how potential misinterpretations by Supreme Court justices may shape political processes and commerce. His talk was sponsored by the Center for Legislative Studies.

Twenty years ago this fall, then-President of BSU Adrian Tinsley announced the opening of the Center for the Advancement of Research and Teaching (CART), a new initiative aimed to encourage and provide support for faculty and librarian research.

Video: Nordic Weaving, Women and Power

An archaeologist and expert on Icelandic and Scandinavian textiles, Dr. Michele Hayeur Smith, discusses current research on Nordic textile collections from 10 Viking Age mortuary sites and 11 settlements from the medieval period. Her work sheds light on age-old associations between female embodiment and power in Norse culture. Dr. Hayeur Smith is a curator at the Haffenreffer Museum of Anthropology at Brown University.

English Professor John Mulrooney is associate producer of The Peacemaker, a documentary about the life and work of famed peacemaker Padraig O'Malley. When filming brought the professor to Iraq this summer, veteran Jessica Melendy, '13, had the chance to jump on board as production assistant thanks to BSU.

Distinguished Speaker Series

Bob Woodward, legendary Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author, will be the featured speaker at the President's Distinguished Speaker Series on Monday, Dec. 3, at 7 p.m. in the Rondileau Campus Center Auditorium. Since 1971, Woodward has worked for The Washington Post, where he is an associate editor. He and Carl Bernstein were the main reporters on the Watergate scandal for which The Post won the Pulitzer Prize in 1973. His participation in Bridgewater State University's Distinguished Speaker Series marks the 40th anniversary of Watergate.

Q and A: Kenia Rivera on Tent City

Senior Kenia Rivera remembers that Monday night vividly, wondering if the tent she was sleeping in would collapse, as heavy rain pounded away at the thin roof. Luckily it stood strong. This happened on what was the first night of Bridgewater State University’s Tent City, organized each November by the university’s student-run Social Justice League to raise awareness about homelessness.

As part of the Children's Physical Developmental Clinic Guest Lecturer Series, Jeff Migliozzi, a teacher at Perkins School for the Blind, shares his perspective on his own blindness and overcoming challenges of everyday life. Mr. Migliozzi also talks to the crowd of education students about Perkins, where he's been for more than two decades, and content in the school's core curriculum other schools should consider for special needs students.

Guest Speaker Talks Environment, Literature

Guest speaker Karen Thornber, associate professor of humanities at Harvard University, delivered a talk for campus and community members, titled, "Illusions and Delusions: Misperceiving Damaged Environments in East Asian Literatures," in Burnell Hall. Her talk was part of the Asian Studies Distinguished Lecture Series.

Professor Thornber's teaching and scholarly work focuses on the literature and culture of East Asia (China, Japan, Korea and Taiwan), as well as diasporas, environment, gender, revolution, medicine, post-colonialism.
