Passover, Seder Held

Rabbi J. Hannah Orden of Temple B'nai Israel in Laconia, N.H., visited campus for the third year in a row to conduct a Seder, the Jewish ritual feast that marks the beginning of the Jewish holiday of Passover. The ceremony was part of the fourth annual Passover Celebration and Seder held in the Rondileau Campus Center.

'Shoulder-to-Shoulder'

To retired Gen. Walter Natynczyk, chief of defence for the Canadian Forces from 2008 to 2012, his country and the U.S. are closely related. Almost literally. "When you think of the United States and Canada together, you think of us having family ties," he said. "It's more than friendship that connects us, it's the respect for the sovereignty of each nation and the trust and the confidence we have in each other."

Hoop Dreams Crashed

Chris Herren, author of Basketball Junkie and former NBA basketball player, was welcomed to campus by President Dana Mohler-Faria as the spring 2013 distinguished speaker. The Fall River native and Durfee High School legend, shared with the packed auditorium his story, from his time as an All-American high school player and NBA start to the drug addictions that left his life in disarray.

‘One Book’ Author Visits

When Nathaniel Philbrick, author of In the Heart of the Sea, visited campus as part of the One Book One Community project, it must have felt somewhat familiar to him. He began by announcing that his in-laws are alumni of Bridgewater. He then joked about once living in Bridgewater, Conn. “I’d much rather live in Bridgewater, Massachusetts,” he said. “This is a great town.”

‘Documenting’ Conflicts

James Demo visited campus to discuss his forthcoming documentary, Peacemaker. BSU Professor John Mulrooney of the English Department is the film’s producer. He and Jessica Melendy, ’13, traveled to Iraq for an international peace conference recently to do some filming.

“Change is Hard” read the screen behind keynote speaker Rosanne Haggerty at one point during the sixth annual spring forum sponsored by BSU’s Take Force to End Homelessness. Those gathered for the event, who work on the front lines battling this difficult social issue, know that indeed the road is difficult, but progress, when it comes, is sweet.

American Southwest Presentation

Author Tom Miller will share his tales of the magic and realities of his adopted home, the American Southwest, at a special session of the Geography Frameworks class on Monday, April 8, starting at 3:20 p.m. in Room 120 of the Center for Science & Mathematics. Famous for his work in Latin America, the author will speak about his book Revenge of the Sanguaro. The presentation is open to the campus community and the general public. Admission is free.

Coffee Tasting

News & Events

Students in the Geography Second-Year Seminar, the Secret Life of Coffee, will share their research about the coffees of more than a dozen countries - with free samples. The annual event, held in conjunction with the Social Justice League, will be Thursday, April 4 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Rondileau Campus Center Ballroom. Admission is free.
