Dr. Matthew Batt, author of the highly acclaimed memoir "Sugarhouse: Turning the Neighborhood Crack House into Our Home Sweet Home," will read from his recent nonfiction work and answer questions about memoir, narrative craft and his creative process. Sponsored by the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Department of English, his lecture will be Thursday, April 4, starting at 4:45 p.m. in Room 112 of East Campus Commons. A book signing will follow (book sales by the BSU book store). The event is open to the public and the campus community.

In “Looking Up,” his current exhibition at the Anderson Gallery, Professor Collin Asmus combines both the old and new to produce compelling images from that vast expanse above. As he puts it: “I am interested in how contemporary viewing technologies help shape our understanding of our surroundings.

'And Still We Rise'

News & Events

Enter the world of drug addiction, domestic assault and homelessness through "And Still We Rise," A theatrical performance by and about those who survive and share their stories of coming through. Artistic director Dev Luthra crafted and presents a  play to help performers affirm their transformation. The  performance will take place Wednesday, April 3, starting at 8:15 p.m. in Boyden Hall's Horace Mann Auditorium. A question-and-answer session will follow. The performance is cosponsored by the Office of University and Community Partnerships.

'Review' Time

Bridgewater Review is now in its third decade as the premier showcase of scholarly work by BSU faculty and librarians. Over that time it has gone through changes yet has always managed to hold to a high standard while bringing readers research papers, book reviews, artwork and more.

History Professor Andrew Holman was named editor in January 2012. He’d previously worked with the previous editors, Drs. William Levin and Michael Kryzanek, both longtime BSU faculty members.

BSU holds Africa Awareness Week

The seventh annual Africa Awareness Week, held the week of March 25, offers a chance for the campus community and area residents to learn more about this fast-developing continent.

Before the annual event was started, there were only a handful of courses at BSU focused on Africa. Now the institution is home to a minor in African studies, and, thanks to this annual event, students have a greater knowledge and awareness about the continent.

STEM to Stern

The second annual STEM career exploration networking program brought to campus students from three area high schools, giving them a chance to learn about career options in several different fields.

New international agreements

The institution and its Center for Middle East Studies now has comprehensive and exclusive  memorandum of understanding with Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah University, Fes, Morocco, Marmara University, Istanbul, Turkey and University of Duhok, Kurdistan, Iraq.

Distinguished Canadian Address

The Canadian Studies Program at Bridgewater State University will hold its annual Distinguished Canadian Address featuring Gen. Walter Natyczyk, recently retired chief of staff of the Canadian Armed Forces. He held the position as Canada's top soldier from 2008-2012. The program will be held Thursday, March 28, starting at 12:45 p.m. in the Moakley Center Auditorium. A reception will follow. Gen. Natynczyk has had a decorated and distinguished career. A graduate of the U.S. Army War College, he commanded United Nations Peacekeeping troops in Cypress, Bosnia and Croatia in the 1990s.

Student Piano Gala

News & Events

A Student Piano Gala Concert will be held on Thursday, April 4 starting at 8 p.m. in Boyden Hall's Horace Mann Auditorium. The concert will feature works by composers pushing the boundaries of music of their time such as Beethoven, Alberto Ginastera and Edvard Grieg. Admission is free and the event is open to the public.
