The Bridgewater Credit Union donated $10,000 to help fund BSU's Financial Literacy and Giving (FLAG) program. Part of the gift will help three groups of FLAG students implement their own service projects.
The service projects, which will be implemented this fall, include a financial literacy training program for local high school students, a student art gallery aimed at educational outreach, and a resident hall recycling program at BSU to benefit various charities. Incoming FLAG students may join in on the projects or start their own.

Patrick Fuller was proud of the traveling water sanitizer he built with Beckwith Middle School classmates for Bridgewater State University's eighth annual Invention Convention, where teams of local school children presented their inventions for competition.
"People are dying from water pollution all over the world," said Patrick. "This could possibly save millions of lives."

BSU hosted its second Middle East International Conference, where participants hailing from all over the world gathered in the campus center's large ballroom for presentations and discussions focusing on issues concerning women's rights and uprisings in the Middle East.

Before they walked across the commencement stage to receive their bachelor's degrees, a number of undergraduates were honored with traditional Kente Cloths for their outstanding academic achievements and demonstrating strong leadership.
"This day embodies my journey through college," said William Medero, one of the Kente Cloth recipients. "It's me celebrating everything I've been through to get here today. It's like a rite of passage into the real world."

Forced to move temporarily across country and finish his Master's of Public Administration degree online due to a health condition, Dennis resident Andrew Whipple had no hope of attending his own commencement ceremony at BSU. So, the university helped bring commencement to the graduate.

In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the gifting of cherry blossom trees that sit along the Potomac in Washington, D.C., the Consul General of Japan to Boston Takeshi Hikihara presented a cherry blossom tree to BSU.
The consul general was accompanied by his wife, Hammi, and Vice Consul Mika Iga, for the gift-giving ceremony held on the Boyden Hall garden.

MassMATE (Massachusetts Mathematics Association of Teacher Educators) held its sixth annual conference at BSU, where more than 250 math education leaders from across the commonwealth learned about engaging students in math under the new Common Core State Standards.
The common standards initiative is a state-led effort that provides a consistent framework for teachers to prepare children for college and the workforce. Massachusetts joined 46 other U.S. states and territories in adopting the common standards in 2010.
