One of the most interesting things senior Kelsey Pinkham is learning at her summer internship with the New England Coastal Wildlife Alliance is the individual markings and names of whales off the coast of Plymouth, where she travels with a local whale watch. A crowd favorite is Salt, a world-famous humpback.
Fourteen students and a faculty member from the University of Macao recently completed a week-long visit to Bridgewater State University as part of a unique study tour that focuses on American government.
Along with Hong Kong, Macao is one of the two special administrative regions of China.
Irbid is the second largest city in Jordan, a teeming metropolis with a population of more than half a million, and home to Dr. Mahmoud Al-Kailani, head of the Department of Marketing in the city's Yarmouk University.
During any other summer, Dr. Al-Kailani, a professor of business and marketing, would be in the city with his wife and four children, preparing for the fall semester. Instead, he is 8,000 miles away in the relatively small town of Bridgewater, where he is a visiting lecturer at BSU.
In a lab in the Science and Mathematics Center, graduate student Stephanie Hallett readied a table-top device that uses lasers to measure the speed of light. Several mirrors were aligned perfectly, the lights dimmed, and the measurements appear via wavelength on a small screen. When the lights came back on, she expressed her excitement.
Two BSU representatives who attended the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) International Convention in Boston made connections with industry leaders in hopes of opening more research, internship and employment possibilities for undergraduates.
"Everything we do goes back to increasing opportunities for our students," said Dean Arthur Goldstein of the College of Science and Mathematics, who attended the event with Dr. Joseph Seggio, assistant professor of biology.
The Bridge Partnership, a 13-day summer academic program at BSU for New Bedford's Roosevelt Middle School students, is underway. Through the end of July, a total of 150 students attending in two separate sessions will live in a university residence hall, take day and evening courses with BSU faculty and staff, and tour educational, cultural and historic sites in Boston and southeastern Massachusetts.
Dr. Lee Torda, assistant professor of English, and four students are spending nearly three weeks in Israel this month. The young writers are working on creative nonfiction pieces focusing on different aspects of life in Israel.
A training session organized by the Office of Student Involvement and Leadership brought more than 30 Orientation Leaders to New Bedford High School to relive the high school experience and answer questions about college life.

Dr. Skip Fennell, former president of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, delivered a talk in the Math and Science Center focused on how teachers can best incorporate Common Core State Standards into their curriculum.
The common standards initiative is a state-led effort that provides a consistent framework for teachers to prepare children for college and the workforce. Massachusetts joined 46 other U.S. states and territories in adopting the common standards in 2010.
Eighteen faculty members from the School of Languages and Communication Studies at Beijing Jiaotong University (BJTU) are in the first week of BSU's first ever English Teacher Training Program, which will run through July.
"The main focus of the program is for the visiting faculty to learn more about teaching English as a second language and American studies," said key organizer Dr. Wing Kai-To, professor of history at BSU and coordinator of the university's Asian Studies program.
