Hooray from Hollywood

BSU students have a history of success at Campus Moviefest. Word has just been received from the final showcase, held in Hollywood, that students Mac Capen and Mike Shanahan, along with alumnus Jim Sass, earned Best 3D Film honors for Prince of Pixel Tower. The winning team received a $2,500 grant to continue making 3D films for Panasonic, one of the event’s sponsors.

Professor to study ‘permaculture’

Ronald Maribett, a visiting Lecturer in the Geography Department, has been awarded a scholarship to attend this month's Permaculture Your Campus Conference. Held at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, the conference focuses on providing attendees with the tools necessary to transform their home campus using permaculture design to be more ecologically, economically, and socially regenerative.

Alumna Wins Art Award

Artist Anne Heywood, ’90, was presented the Silver Award by the International Association of Pastel Society for the 2nd Masters Circle Exhibition at the 10th IAPS Biennial Convention in Albuquerque, NM. Heywood's pastel, "Walk in the Woods IV", was her winning painting, chosen from among numerous entries by other members of IAPS's exclusive Master Circle, a distinction conferred upon only a small percentage of IAPS members worldwide. Ann is a ’90 graduate, member of the Alumni Chamber Choir and was selected by the Bridgewater Alumni Association as the 2012 recipient of the Dr.

Inventiveness Showcased

Once again, students from across the region came to campus to showcase their creativity, as BSU hosted the ninth annual Invention Convention.

One thing’s for sure, these middle school students have had their thinking caps on, producing a wide range of inventions. One by one, the teams demonstrated their projects inside the auditorium of the Conant Science and Math Center. “This year’s entries were great, unique,” said Mary Price, director of the university’s Center for Pre K-12 Educational Outreach, which funds and operates the program.

Sitting in the statehouse office of Sen. Marc Pacheco recently, BSU student Francesco Hladysz talked about his days in high school and the difficulty of watching his friends go on to further their education.

“I always wanted to go to college,” he said.

Professor named Fraser Institute fellow

Dr. Aeon Skoble, chairman of the Philosophy Department, has been named a senior fellow at the Fraser Institute. The Institute said the selection was based in part on Dr. Skoble’s innovative methods of teaching economic key concepts and the philosophy behind markets and voluntary exchange.

"Professor Skoble is one of North America's leading educators in the philosophy of markets. By connecting economics to popular culture, he offers an approachable, engaging perspective for students of all ages," said Jason Clemens, Fraser Institute executive vice-president.

BSU hosted the annual conference of the Massachusetts Mathematics Association of Teacher Educators (MassMATE), which featured a full slate of speakers, workshops, breakout sessions, exhibits and more.

Art Professor Selected

Professor Margaret Bellafiore (instructor, art) was selected to be part of the Boston Children’s Museum’s centennial celebration. She designed a window installation for a letter of the alphabet. Professor Bellafiore said she chose the letter S for “symbol.” The installation includes a 100-year-old American bald eagle, a peace symbol, the Great Seal of the United States, 26 little "dolls" holding semaphore flags, an 1883 silver dollar, quarters and several dollar bills.

Looking at Almodóvar

Dr. Leora Lev (foreign languages) has contributed an essay, "Our Rapists, Ourselves: Women and the Staging of Rape in the Cinema of Pedro Almodóvar," to the recently published Companion to Pedro Almdovar. Dr. Lev’s chapter suggests that Almodóvar's cinematic reflections on rape offer a more nuanced, troubling, and necessary analysis that complicates – even when it's also clearly grappling with – understandings of rape both within Spain and beyond in ways that resist reductive categorizations.
