Spreading ‘Sunshine’

News & Events

Once again this fall, students and two staff members volunteered for a weekend at Camp Sunshine, which is an organization in Casco, Maine, dedicated to working with children with life threatening illnesses and their families. The students served as counselors throughout the weekend and were divided into different age groups. They played games and engaged in different activities with the children.  In addition, some served in the kitchen preparing meals and getting to know the campers.  

Island Tale

“Water Woman: Community and Sustainability in Trinidad and Tobago,” a documentary produced and directed by anthropology Professor Diana Fox, will be shown on campus Oct. 2 at noon. The film will be followed by a panel discussion led by Dr. Fox and biology Professor Kevin Curry about his work on water scarcity in Cambodia, and the global water crisis.

Welcome Home

George A. Weygand Hall, the new 500-bed residence hall, was officially opened during a dedication ceremony that drew a large audience of alumni, state officials and Dr. Weygand himself.

“It has been a pleasure to watch this building grow,” said the much-admired professor emeritus. “To go through there now is something I’ve been waiting a number of years for.”

Evening Degree Info Session

An Evening Degree Information Session has been scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 23 at 6 p.m. in the Dunn Conference Suite in Crimson Hall, 200 East Campus Drive. The session will provide prospective students an opportunity to visit the Bridgewater State University Campus and learn about its nine evening degree programs, the admissions and transfer process, as well as attending the university in the evening. Participants are encouraged to bring questions for a Q&A portion of the event, which usually lasts an hour.

New Author Series

The Department of English at Bridgewater State University is launching is new Visiting Author Series on Thursday, Nov. 21 with novelist and memoirist Andre Dubus III. After a craft talk and Q&A with faculty, staff and students, he will present a reading and book signing which is open to the public at 7 p.m. in the Conant Auditorium in the Center for Science & Mathematics.

Japan Festival Event

News & Events

The Honorable Akira Muto, consul general for Japan in Boston, will speak on "Japan in Asia Pacific" as part of Bridgewater State University's Japan Festival. The public and campus community are welcome to attend the speaking event scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 25 at 3:30 p.m. in East Hall's Dunn Conference Center, Room B.

2-Day Friendship Festival

A two-day Japan Friendship Festival, honoring the legacy of Shuji Isawa, Bridgewater State University's first international student, will be held Sept. 24-25. A theatrical presentation, "The Traditional Japanese Kyogen Theater: Humor Connecting People Across Cultures," will be presented Sept. 24 from 3 to 5 p.m. in Horace Mann Auditorium. Kyogen is a spoken drama that is based upon laughter and comedy. It uses everyday life of the common people in feudal society or folk tales as its subject and realistically depicts a kind of "everyman" figure, evoking gentle and entertaining humor.

Digital Shakespeare

Eric Alexander of the University of Wisconsin will present "Digital Shakespeare" on Wednesday, Sept. 25 at 3:30 p.m. in Maxwell Library's Heritage Room. The computer science expert will focus on the University of Wisconsin-Madison's Visualizing English Project, "Serendip," designed to unlock insight in early modern literature. With hundreds of thousands of documents forming the corpora of interest, researchers cannot always rely on familiar methods of close reading to perform broad analysis.
