Dr. Diana Fox, professor of anthropology, screened her new documentary, Earth, Water, Woman: Community and Sustainability in Trinidad and Tobago, for a campus audience. The film tells the inspiring story of how Trinidad’s Akilah Jaramogi and her family restored a forest ecosystem bringing clean water to their village.

East meets West

The legacy of Shuji Isawa, class of 1877 at what was then Bridgewater State Normal School, who later returned to his native Japan where he is considered the father of teacher education, was celebrated in a series of events held recently at BSU.

The three programs – a theatrical performance, a lecture, and a concert – brought together a range of talent from Japan and the United States.

Fundraising Gala Concert

The Department of Music at Bridgewater State University is holding its 6th annual Scholarship Fundraising Gala Concert on Monday, Nov. 4, starting at 8 p.m. in Boyden Hall's Horace Mann Auditorium. Ensembles performing include the Chamber Choir, West African Drumming Ensemble, Jazz Ensembles, members of the Wind Ensemble, and various student vocal and instrumental soloists. A reception will follow. Tickets are $15 for adults; $10 for senior citizens, employees and alumni; and free for BSU students and youth.

Aviation Open House

Bridgewater State University's Aviation Training Center will hold an open house Saturday, Oct. 26, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. A presentation for those considering a degree in aviation science will begin at 11:30 a.m. The center is located in the New Bedford Regional Airport at 1852 Shawmut Ave., North Dartmouth. Tweeting Syria

All eyes have been on Syria as of late over the government’s suspected use of chemical weapons against its own people. Those who really wanted to know the story, “on the ground,” as they say, weren’t watching the network news or listening to public radio.
 
They were tuned into social media sites like Twitter and Facebook. Dr. Jabbar Al-Obaidi, professor of communication studies, tells his students this is where they should turn.
 
“They were amazed,” he said.
 

Ending the Fast

Eid al-Fitr, the "festival of breaking of the fast," was held as part of a ceremony celebrated by Muslims worldwide that marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting.
