Bridgewater State University will celebrate its fourth National Native American Heritage Month PowWow on Sunday, Nov. 18, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the Kelly Gymnasium on Park Avenue.
Japan Friendship

A "Japan Friendship Piano and Chamber Concert" honoring the legacy of Shuji Isawa, Class of 1877, will be held Tuesday, Oct. 30 at 8 p.m. in Boyden Hall's Horace Mann Auditorium. Isawa is regarded as the father of public education in his native Japan. Tickets are not required for this event, which is free and open to the public.
'Pirates' Coming to Bridgewater

Theater and dance at Bridgewater State University will present Gilbert and Sullivan's "Pirates of Penzance" in the Rondileau Campus Center Auditorium at 8 p.m. on Oct. 26, 27, Nov. 1, 2 and 3 as well as at 2 p.m. on Oct. 28. Tickets are $15 for the general public; $10 for senior citizens, members of the military and students with ID; and $5 for children under age 12. Aloha Classic Road Race

The Carol Mulloy Cuttle Aloha Classic 5K Road Race will kick off Alumni Weekend festivities on Saturday, Oct. 13, starting at 9 a.m. at the Tinsley Center. The event benefits the Carol Mulloy Cuttle Memorial Scholarship Fund, a leading supporter of the Childrens Physical Developmental Clinic at BSU. Awards will be given to male and female winners in a number of categories. Cost to enter is $20 for adults and $10 for students. Registration on the day of the race begins at 8 a.m. or may be done in advance at www.alumni.bridgew.edu/5k2012.

Profile: Professor Thomas Moore

In December, after more than 44 years on the faculty of Bridgewater State University, Professor Thomas Moore of the Department of Mathematics will retire. But the many scholarly contributions he’s made to the field of mathematics -- and the impact he’s had on thousands of former students and countless colleagues -- will endure.
“Originally, I hadn’t planned on being a mathematician,” said Dr. Moore. “In fact, when I entered college, my plan was to become a writer and so I majored in English.”

Thanks to funding provided by The Bridgewater State University Foundation, four students attended the recent political conventions. Amy Anderson and Mike Verlezza traveled to the Democratic convention in Charlotte, N.C., while Kayla Harvey and Devin Armstrong attended the RNC in Tampa, Fla, along with Dr. George Serra, professor and chair of political science. We asked for the students' thoughts, and three responded.

Professor co-writes report on tea
While attending a meeting for the Food and Agriculture Organization Intergovernmental Group (FAO-IGG) of the United Nations, Dr. James Hayes-Bohanan, professor of geography, helped develop a report to help guide the FAO-IGG in assisting tea growers around the world adapt to climate change. Dr. Hayes-Bohanan co-wrote the paper at the meeting, held in Washington D.C., with Working Group on Climate Change, comprised of top tea researchers from Sri Lanka, India, and Kenya. Dr.

President of Cape Verde Jorge Carlos de Almeida Fonseca visited campus for a meet and greet with President Dana Mohler-Faria and BSU’s Cape Verdean exchange students, before returning home following a one-week stay in the states.
