News & Events

Once again, students from across the region came to campus to showcase their creativity, as BSU hosted the ninth annual Invention Convention.

One thing’s for sure, these middle school students have had their thinking caps on, producing a wide range of inventions. One by one, the teams demonstrated their projects inside the auditorium of the Conant Science and Math Center. “This year’s entries were great, unique,” said Mary Price, director of the university’s Center for Pre K-12 Educational Outreach, which funds and operates the program.

Dr. Aeon Skoble, chairman of the Philosophy Department, has been named a senior fellow at the Fraser Institute. The Institute said the selection was based in part on Dr. Skoble’s innovative methods of teaching economic key concepts and the philosophy behind markets and voluntary exchange.

"Professor Skoble is one of North America's leading educators in the philosophy of markets. By connecting economics to popular culture, he offers an approachable, engaging perspective for students of all ages," said Jason Clemens, Fraser Institute executive vice-president.

The Bridgewater native and 1999 graduate of Coyle and Cassidy High School in Taunton, was working construction and delivering auto parts in the years before coming to BSU.

However, things changed after Mr. Matta stepped into an organic chemistry class that granted him entry to the world of research. “Suddenly, it all fell into place,” he said.

"I’m glad it’s over,” said graduating senior John DeMille. “It was fun while it lasted.” The Pembroke resident and earth science major was one of nearly 1,200 undergraduate students to cross the stage and receive their bachelor’s degrees during the 172nd spring commencement convocation.

Thousands of family and friends of the graduates attended the ceremony, held on the Boyden Quadrangle under sunny skies.
