Embracing Writing Reception Held

Four students were honored for essays they had published in the English department’s Embracing Writing journal, which features information about BSU, articles on the writing process, and outstanding student writing from various courses. Each student at the 2012 Embracing Writing Reception received an Excellence in Writing certificate from Dr. Yulia Stakhnevich, assistant professor of English, as well as prize money.

When Michael Verlezza decided to attended Bridgewater State University he got more than he bargained for. In a good way. The economics and finance major from Attleboro was given the opportunity to spend time in the nation’s capital thanks to the institution’s partnership with The Washington Center, the largest independent, nonprofit academic internship program in the country.
“It is an experience of enrichment and inspiration that will come to define my academic career at Bridgewater State University,” he said.

Professors present on writing
Former Dean of College of Education and Allied Studies Anna Bradfield (now executive director of university initiatives), former Writing Across the Curriculum Coordinator Michelle Cox and Assistant WAC Coordinator Phyllis Gimbel, presented “In Response to the New Common Core State Standards: WAC/Secondary Education Collaborations” in Savannah, Ga., at the International Writing Across the Curriculum Conference. Attendees to the conference came from as far away as South Africa.
New chair of the board
Dr. Diana Jennings, director of Regional Outreach, was elected chairperson of the board of directors of The Southern New England Entrepreneurs Forum. The organization is dedicated to serving entrepreneurship and venture activity with programs that combine topical forums with networking opportunities. Learn more at www.sneef.org. Early one morning last month, a group of international students met at the commuter rail platform on campus. Jennifer Currie, staff assistant for the Dr. Edward W. Minnock Center for International Engagement, handed each a train schedule and a map of Boston.
“This is where we are going,” Ms. Currie told the students as she pointed to the small image of the Massachusetts Statehouse. The students were excited.
