The Bridgewater Triangle

In 1983, cryptozoologist Loren Coleman published his book "Mysterious America" in which he described a 200-square-mile region in Southeastern Massachusetts with a long history of paranormal activity dubbed "The Bridgewater Triangle." A documentary on The Bridgewater Triangle will be shown on Monday, Oct. 28 starting at 7:30 p.m. in Boyden Hall's Horace Mann Auditorium. Tickets are $8 and may be purchased by emailing boxoffice@bridgew.edu or by calling 508.531.1321.

Domestic Violence Awareness

Dr. Lysetta Hurge-Putnam, executive director of Independence House, Inc., will talk about social causes and consequences of domestic and sexual violence on Thursday, Oct. 24 in Crimson Hall's Dunn Conference Suite. Domestic violence impacts a third of women in the U.S. Victims come from all age groups, social classes, gender, racial and ethnic groups. Independence House works with victims of domestic and sexual violence on Cape Cod by providing services, education, prevention and training. Dr. Hurge-Putnam has served as executive director of Independence House since 1999.

David A. Weitz, the Mallinckrodt Professor of Physics and of Applied Physics at Harvard University, presented a talk called “Physics of Cooking.” His lecture was part of the fall 2013 Meeting of the New England Section of the American Physical Society. The Department of Physics hosted the two-day event, which featured lectures and plenary sessions focused on biophysics, in particular optical and nano techniques used in cutting-edge biology and chemistry research.

‘War and Peace’

Padraig O'Malley, the John Joseph Moakley Distinguished Professor of Peace and Reconciliation at the University of Massachusetts-Boston, came to campus to deliver his talk, “War & Peace: Illusions We Comfort Ourselves With.” The address was part of the first John Quincy Adams Foreign Affairs Distinguished Speaker series.

Asian Perspectives

News & Events

The Association for Asian Studies brought to campus its New England Regional Conference 2013.

Spread over the better part of two days, the event brought together scholars from across the United States. Institutions represented included BSU, Harvard, Yale and many others.

Second Sight

Tyler Holloway, ’14, with the help of his mentor, physics Professor Ed Deveney, has built an optical trap. The project is something usually undertaken by graduate students, however, he and his mentor believe optics are a growing and important field. So last summer, Tyler built BSU’s first-ever optical trap as part of an ATP research project.

Managing Well

The Careers in Management Panel Program brought to campus executives from State Street Bank, Ocean Spray, AccuRounds and Enterprise Rent-A-Car. Each discussed his or her management career with an eye toward helping students find the right path in their chosen field.

Water World

Dr. Diana Fox, professor of anthropology, screened her new documentary, Earth, Water, Woman: Community and Sustainability in Trinidad and Tobago, for a campus audience. The film tells the inspiring story of how Trinidad’s Akilah Jaramogi and her family restored a forest ecosystem bringing clean water to their village.

Opportunity Knocking
