Aviation Open House

The Department of Aviation Science at Bridgewater State University will hold an open house on Saturday, March 15 at its Flight Training Center located at the New Bedford Regional Airport, 1852 Shawmut Ave. The event, which will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., is open to anyone who is interested in pursuing a bachelor's degree in aviation science. For more information or to register, contact Greg Bongiorno, aviation program manager, at gbongiorno@bridgew.edu or by calling 508.531.2654.

Alumnus Augusto Goncalves is plugged in. The former political science major is in to social media to such a degree that when the White House was looking for people to Tweet during the recent State of the Union Address, he was selected and invited to attend.

More than 300 people gathered in Flynn Dining Commons to celebrate BSU’s 28th annual observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday. Those in attendance included students and teachers from public schools in Brockton and New Bedford, as well as invited guests and honorees.

In a way, it was the vision of a man who spoke about dead people that got Dr. Stephen Nelson interested in the life and times of college presidents.

That man was Dr. Harold T. Shapiro, who spoke of previous college presidents in his inaugural address at Princeton College in the late ‘80s.

How important are looks in an election? Do voters make judgments based on the trustworthiness of a candidate’s appearance?

These questions and others are at the heart of a study currently being conducted by members of a student research group mentored by Dr. Elizabeth Spievak’s, associate professor of psychology. The study extends work previously done by BSU student researchers.

The Next Stage

BSU Theater's fall musical, "Painted Alice," the world premiere by William Donnelly, '94, was chosen to be performed at the Region One Kennedy Center/American College Theatre Festival later this month.

The play was one of five productions chosen from the region, which encompasses all of New England and New York. Dr. Suzanne Ramczyk, theater professor and director of the play, said more than 20 BSU students are involved in the production.

   “A straightforward take on the complex issue of effective school leadership,” is how one reviewer described a new book co-authored by Dr. Phyllis Gimbel, associate professor educational leadership.

Highly Involved

Keeping students engaged and involved is the focus of the annual National Association for Campus Activities Regional Conference. This year, members of BSU’s Office of Student Involvement and Leadership played integral parts in making the event a success. Meanwhile, a student and staff member took home some of the top honors.

Fond Farewell

The recent international graduation ceremony recognized and celebrated the achievements of nine exchange students. The annual event caps the students’ time on campus, and allows administrators and faculty to share with the visitors a fond farewell.

“The ceremony is a bittersweet time for our students as well as for me personally,” said Dr. Roopa Rawjee, director of international student services.
