Dr. Richard Enright of the Department of Geological Sciences and students Eric Croll and Timothy Kiesel attended the Annual Meeting of the American Geophysical Union (AGU) held in San Francisco, where the students presented research they conducted under Dr. Enright’s mentorship.

“This is the first time a BSU professor has ever mentored two students whose work was accepted for the same prestigious American Geophysical Union meeting,” said Dr. Enright. “They did an admirable job both during the summer and at the meeting.

More than 500 students participated in the Mid-Year Symposium, a showcase of student research and creative work from 100- and 200-level courses, which was held in the campus center ballroom.

“This is a celebration of early undergraduate scholarship and creative work and it’s great to see the diversity of disciplines that are represented,” said Dr. Jenny Shanahan, director of the Office of Undergraduate Research, which sponsors the program.

Four alumni who work in the health-science field shared the ins and outs of their professions during a panel discussion organized by Career Services in the Science and Math Center.

When Jim Gouzias, a senior and army veteran, was assigned a capstone project for his Issues of Diversity and Oppression course, he decided to organize something memorable. He led 30 classmates and teachers on an hour-long trek around campus in a simulation of the tumultuous journey immigrants take trying to cross the U.S.-Mexico border. In the army, Mr. Gouzias served a few short stints at the border from 2005-2007.

From outside the Edward W. Minnock Center for International Engagement, BSU’s first ever Legislative Reception may have looked like a formal, invitation-only event, as a number of local officials mingled with a crowd of campus constituents. However, the reception was exactly the opposite: it was an open event for the entire campus community designed to connect all BSU students with local legislators.
