The Campus Center Auditorium was filled with music when BSU hosted the third-annual High School Honors Band Festival. Twelve local high schools performed with BSU’s wind ensemble.

Serving as directors for the evening’s performance were Dr. Edwin C. Powell of the University of the Pacific, and BSU’s own Dr. Donald Running.

STEM Time

Students from six area high schools attended a workshop held on campus entitled, “STEM Career Exploration” where they had the opportunity to meet and talk with professionals in science, technology, engineering and mathematics to learn about opportunities in those fields.

As part of the day's activities participants had a chance to tour BSU's new $98.5 million dollar science building.

Ambassador (retired) R. Nicholas Burns, professor of the practice of diplomatic and international politics at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, was featured as part of BSU’s John Quincy Adams Foreign Affairs Distinguished Speaker Series.

Gov. Deval Patrick and President Dana Mohler-Faria led a panel discussion titled, “The Future of Black History,” shining a light on issues pertaining to race in America.

Central Developments

President Dana Mohler-Faria and Dr. Lisa Battaglino, dean of the College of Education and Allied Studies, led a contingent of a dozen students to Belize to continue the institution’s long-standing commitment to the Central American nation.

“It was a genuine privilege for me to see first-hand the kind of work in improving schools that she and BSU students have been doing there over the past seven years,” the president said.

Down Syndrome

Dr. Catherine Bearce Nowak, clinical director of The Feingold Center, Division of Genetics, at Boston's Children's Hospital, will be the featured speaker at the Children's Physical Developmental Clinic's Spring Speaker Series on Saturday, March 1. Her topic is "Physical and Motor Characteristics of Children with Down Syndrome" and will begin at 8 a.m. in Room 120 of the Center for Science & Mathematics at Bridgewater State University.

BAM! Student Festival

Theater and dance at Bridgewater State University presents, as part of its annual BAM! Student Festival, "Star Spangled Girl," a political-romantic comedy about two best friend pitted against each other in a love triangle that spirals out of hand. Written by Neil Simon and directed by Danni Vitorino, the final performance is Sunday, March 2 at 2 p.m. in the Rondileau Campus Center Auditorium. Tickets are $10 for students with ID, senior citizens, youth and military; $15 for the general public.

A mashup of three of Shakespeare's romantic plays, the dreamlike world of the mischievous Puck is adapted by Micaela Kluver and Corey Cadigan, and is directed by Kluver. A weekend performance has been scheduled for Saturday, March 1 at 2 p.m. Meanwhile, "Star Spangled Girl" is a political-romantic comedy about two best friend pitted against each other in a love triangle that spirals out of hand.
