The Pedro Pires Institute for Cape Verdean Studies presented Dr. Ricardo Rosa as part of its Amilcar Cabral lecture series.

Dr. Rosa’s lecture focused on a variety of topics, including the life and work of Mr. Cabral, a political leader from the island, as well as the counterculture, and Cape Verdean hip-hop. All of this he related back to education and life.

Dr. Kimberly Cabot Davis believes that increased exposure to African-American literature, film and music can have a positive effect on racial attitudes among whites in America. 

In her latest book, Beyond the White Negro: Empathy and Anti-Racist Reading (University of Illinois Press, July 2014), Dr. Davis reveals the results of studies conducted over the past eight years involving more than 300 people, from members of book clubs to her own students.

A new dual-enrollment program allows a small group of Wareham High School students to take college-level classes at BSU.

The students, Ryan Bonfiglio, Victoria Weichel and Jeffrey Cifello, stopped by Boyden Hall to visit with President Dana Mohler-Faria and Frederick Clark Jr., executive vice president and vice president of external affairs.

The Office of Institutional Diversity held its annual Day of Dialogue, this year themed Compassion Actions for A Just Community. The event brought together educators and activists from across the region and beyond to discuss best practices in the areas of diversity and social justice.

In his opening remarks, President Dana Mohler-Faria discussed the importance of these things, and the reasons BSU hosts the popular event.

Driven to Inspire

It was an evening full of inspiring words, when BSU welcomed to campus Shiza Shahid to discuss her work as co-founder and global ambassador with the Malala Fund, the organization representing 2014 Nobel Peace Prize recipient Malala Yousafzai, the young Pakistani activist shot by the Taliban for her campaign on behalf of girls' education.

Gov. Deval Patrick joined leaders from Massasoit Community College, Bridgewater State University and the University of Massachusetts-Boston, as well as state and local officials and community leaders, to announce $21.5 million for the renovation of 226 Main St., the site of a new higher education campus in downtown Brockton.

Administrator earns scholarship

Crystal Howard, alumni relations coordinator in University Advancement, was awarded a $1,500 Professional Development Scholarship from the National Educational Alumni Trust (NEAT). 

Bill Dean, Executive Director and CEO of the Texas Tech Alumni Association and Chair of the scholarship committee for NEAT announced the award.
