Civil rights leader Julian Bond came to campus as the fall 2013 presidential distinguished speaker, sharing with a large audience his thoughts on the age of Obama, the Tea Party Movement, conservative politics, Washington’s current troubles, and the scourge of the narrow minded.

After a few humorous remarks and recalling how he’d visited the Bridgewater campus in the 1970s, Mr. Bond got down to business, saying the election of Barack Obama did not equal “racial nirvana.”

Lisa J. Sullivan, ’16, is the United States winner of the Ireland Poetry Project Prize. Her winning entry, “To the Bog of Allen,” is an ekphrastic poem, which means it was written in response to another work of art. Ms. Sullivan’s poem is in response to a short video by Nigel Rolfe called, “Into the Mire.” The poem is printed below; to see the video, visit The Poetry Project’s U.S. winner.

Matinee Dance Performance

Under the direction of Dr. Nancy Moses, professor and chairperson of the Department of Theater and Dance, Winterdance consists of advanced student choreographers who create their own pieces, develop them in the classroom and stage them in this annual dance concert. Winterdance has been a long-standing tradition at Bridgewater State University, delighting audiences for the past 26 years with the philosophy: "dance is for everybody." A matinee performance of Winterdance 2013 will be held Sunday, Dec. 8 at 2 p.m. in the Rondileau Campus Center Auditorium.

Aviation Safety Seminar

Lt. Col. (Ret.) Gary Cooke, chairman of National Business Aviation Association's Bird Strike Working Group and FAASTeam member, will discuss how wildlife hazards are an increasing risk to aviation on Wednesday, Dec. 4 at 5:30 p.m. in the Maxwell Library's Lecture Hall, Room 013. His presentation, made possible by the Bridgewater State University Chapter of the Flight Safety Foundation, will cover the threat that exists today and how it is increasing.
