Music students at Bridgewater have an innate love of creative expression, and they study music at an advanced level through performance, theory, and history. Our program provides a solid foundation in these three aspects of music within a larger liberal arts context.
Through the centuries, music has been an irrepressible and fundamental feature of nearly every society in the world. Our goal as a department is to ensure that music and the appreciation of music continue to thrive and evolve for years to come.
Salil Sachdev has composed music for the orchestra, percussion, piano, theater, voice, and electronic music. At Bridgewater State University, he teaches music theory, form and analysis, introduction to world music, introduction to music of Africa, and directs the West African drumming ensemble, Khakatay. Additionally, he organizes the Annual World Music Festival at the university.
Salil's interest in world music has taken him to India, Ireland and Africa. He has studied hand percussion (including West African Djembe drumming), the Bodhrán (Irish drum), and Solkattu, the rhythmic system of south India.
Salil is currently working towards making a series of documentary films on Indian folk music. In 2008, he completed a film on the music of the Sidis, an ethnic group of East African ancestry living in India for the last 800-900 years. Presently, he is making a film on the folk music of Rajasthan, a state in the northwest part of the country.
In 2011, he also completed a film on the traditional music of Mali, West Africa.
Salil performs with The Lindsays (traditional Irish and popular music group), Caravan (BSU Faculty World Music Trio), and GuiHANGtar (duo performing compositions inspired by traditional Vietnamese music and culture).

Dr. Kreiling teaches music history, music appreciation, class piano, and music fundamentals. Before coming to Bridgewater State University, Dr. Kreiling taught music at the South Shore Conservatory of Music (Hingham, MA) and the University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill, NC). She also taught English at Western Carolina University (Cullowhee, NC). She has sung with Musica Sacra (Cambridge, MA), the Asheville (NC) Symphony Chorus, and the Greensboro (NC) Symphony Chorus, and she performs occasionally as a pianist. Dr. Kreiling's articles on connections between music and literature have appeared in the academic journals Ars Lyrica and Mosaic, and she has given presentations at interdisciplinary conferences in London, Toronto, Honolulu, and other venues. Additional research and writing projects have included program notes for concerts at BSU and elsewhere. A prize-winning poet, Dr. Kreiling has published her work in several print and on-line literary journals, including 14 by 14, Contemporary Sonnet, Dogwood, The Edge City Review, Ekphrasis, The Evansville Review, The Formalist, London Poetry Review, The Lyric, The Pennsylvania Review, Phoebe, SLANT, Thema, and Think Journal. Prior to joining the Massachusetts State University System, Dr. McQuarrie taught at Castleton State College in Vermont where she served as director of their music education lab school, a professor of Music Education, and CMENC Advisor. Before transitioning to higher education full-time, Sarah taught for ten years in both urban and rural school systems.
As a pianist, Sarah McQuarrie regularly performs throughout the United States and Europe accompanying the Castleton Collegiate Chorale, the Bangor Theological Seminary Festival Choir, and for several state and regional high-school music festivals. Most recently she performed at the Nymburk International Music Festival in the Czech Republic.
As a researcher she has regularly presented at the Arts Assessment Summer Institute (sponsored by participating New England Departments of Education), multiple state MENC conferences, and her innovations with lab-school curriculums received attention at the International Piano Pedagogy Conference.

Pianist Deborah Nemko appears in concerts throughout the United States and Europe as both soloist and collaborative artist. In 2002 she performed the Belgian debut of Diane Goolkasian Rahbee's Sonata No. 2 in the Vresse sur Semois International Festival for Pianists and appeared in concert at Carnegie Hall in Rahbee's Concert in a retrospective of her compositions in 2004. Her performance of Rahbee's Preludes from her compact disc Preludes and Toccatinas was featured on Radio Mona Lisa, Amsterdam, The Netherlands, and on The Classical Discoveries Radio Program, Princeton. A champion of contemporary music, composers Dianne Rahbee, Scott Brickman and Justin Rubin have written works for her.
Dr. Nemko is a frequent adjudicator for the New England Conservatory Preparatory Program's Concerto Competition, the Music Teachers National Association Arizona, and Massachusetts State Competitions. Much in demand for her teaching as well as performances, she has conducted master-classes at Buffalo State College, Chapman University, and at Greenfields Chamber Music Institute, Vermont. She is currently on the faculty of the New England Conservatory's Piano Preparatory Program.
Dr. Nemko regularly presents papers and lecture recitals at the International Conference on Arts and Humanities, the International Festival of Women Composers, the College Music Society National and Regional Conferences, MTNA National Conference and the Schubert Club. Dr. Nemko was on the faculty of the International Piano Week, Belgium, from 2001-2005. She is currently the president of the Northeast Region of the College Music Society.
Dr. Nemko truly enjoys mentoring and developing scholarships for music students. Her students have competed in the Boston Steinway Competition, participated in the International Piano Week, and performed in Piano Festivals at Bridgewater State University. Two of her students have received special honors this year - they have been awarded the BSU Shea Scholar Award and been elected Student Representative of the College Music Society Northeast Region in 2007.

Dr. Nicholeris is certified as a public school music educator for grades K-12 and as a public school music administrator. She has taught music at all grade levels from K-college, and her education-research interests are focused in music curriculum philosophy and design developed in accordance with current brain research and studies in physics and meta-physics. In addition to teaching, Dr. Nicholeris works as a choral conductor and has directed school, college, church, and community choruses. Presently, she is the Music Director of the Bridgewater State University Alumni Chamber Choir. Carol Nicholeris is a recognized composer of choral music. Her works, which have been performed both locally and internationally, are published through E. C. Schirmer Music Publishers of Boston.

Dr. Donald J. Running is an Assistant Professor of Music Education and conductor of the Wind Ensemble and Jazz Band at Bridgewater State University. Originally from Minnesota, Dr. Running taught in the public schools of Minnesota and Wisconsin before receiving his Master of Arts degree and PhD in music education from the University of Minnesota. While attending the University of Minnesota, he studied conducting with Craig Kirchhoff, theatre with Kari Margolis, and educational philosophy with Dr. Paul Haack. Dr. Running served as conductor of the East Central Grad Band, assistant conductor of the Encore Wind Ensemble, and premiered his concerto for saxophones, Dre, with the University Campus Orchestra.
In addition to his university duties, Dr. Running is active as an adjudicator/clinician and pursues an active research and writing schedule, most recently finishing his dissertation on developing novice conductors' expressivity through dynamic muscularity. He has been published in Update: Applications of Research in Music Education and Minnesota Music Education Research Review in Gopher Notes. Material relating to the proposed workshop is currently under review with the Bulletin for the Council for Research in Music Education.

Dr. Young, Director of Choral Activities, conducts all of the choral ensembles at BSU, having led performances of major works by Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Persichetti, Rheinberger, Rutter, Stravinsky, and others. Under Dr. Young's direction, the BSU Chamber Singers, a select a cappella choir, has toured throughout Europe and the U.S. as the university's singing ambassadors.Dr. Young's association with the university began in 1985, when he served as staff accompanist; he has since taught classes in music theory, music history, music appreciation, and piano. Dr. Young holds several degrees in organ performance; his teachers have included Carolyn Day Skelton, Yuko Hayashi, Max Miller, Russell Saunders, and John Ferguson. An active recitalist, Dr. Young has performed throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe. Recent performance venues have included the Methuen Memorial Music Hall in Methuen, MA; Trinity Church, Boston; St. Thomas Church, New York; and the Festival d'Orgue in Sens, France.

Through his performances, teaching, and artistic directorship, Danial Acsadi is creating an exciting new direction for the classical guitar. Guided by his wide-ranging interests and Hungarian-American heritage, Dan's repertoire and research link the great musical traditions of Europe and the Americas. Since winning his first competition at the age of fifteen, Dan has performed throughout the United States both as a soloist and in chamber ensembles. Efforts to introduce the classical guitar to a wider audience have taken him to hospitals, assisted-living centers, libraries, churches, and synagogues. As the director of the Boston Classical Guitar Society, Dan is striving to build a growing community through concert series, educational initiatives, and community activities. He holds degrees from the New England Conservatory and Cornell University. Dan's principal teachers have included Eliot Fisk, Pablo Cohen, and John Hall. He has performed in master classes for Leo Brouwer, Manual Barrueco, Eduardo Fernandez, Adam Holzman, Bruce Holzman, and Renato Butturi. Dan maintains a teaching studio in Newton and is on the faculty of Powers Music School (Belmont), the New School of Music (Cambridge), and New England Conservatory's Boston GuitarFest youth workshop.

Saxophonist Jonathan Amon earned the Bachelor of Music Education degree from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in 2004. He subsequently studied at the Conservatoire National de Region de Boulogne-Billancourt, and at the New England Conservatory (MM, 2009). Mr. Amon is a proponent of contemporary music, and he has participated in comissions or premieres of works by Harold Shapero, Robert Lemay, Shih-Hui Chen, Claudio Gabriele, and others. He performs regionally as a soloist and with the Chagall Performance Art Collaborative and other chamber ensembles. His concerto performances include Michael Colgrass's Urban Requiem with the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Wind Ensemble, and the American premiere of Philippe Grouvel's Volcan with the Boston Conservatory Saxophone Ensemble. Amon currently teaches in the community education divisions of the Wayland School District and Concord/Carlisle School District and at Bunker Hill Community College and Bridgewater State University. His primary teachers include Matthew Sintchak, Jean-Michel Goury, and Ken Radnofsky, and he is currently a candidate for the Doctor of Musical Arts degree at Boston University.
Spencer Aston is a freelance trumpet player, conductor, and teacher in the Boston metropolitan area. He currently holds faculty positions at Bridgewater State University, the University of Massachusetts-Boston, the Longy School of Music and the Powers School of Music. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Spencer performs regularly across New England at various schools, churches, and concert venues. He is a founding member of the Fenway Quintet and has been seen in concert with the New Mexico Symphony, San Juan Symphony, Cape Cod Symphony, Nashua Symphony, and many others. Spencer is currently the principal cornetist with the New England Brass Band. During the summer, Spencer has performed in residence at the Ohio Light Opera in Wooster, OH for their 2009 and 2010 seasons.
As a soloist, Dr. Aston has presented concerts and recitals on three continents including tours of Mexico, China, and most recently the 2010 US National Tour of Gershwin's Porgy and Bess. He was featured soloist with the New England Brass Band in December of 2007 and the Sandia High School Wind Ensemple in February of 2006. Spencer was a member of the Boston University Trumpet Ensemble, placing 2nd at the 2007 National Trumpet Competition in Fairfax, VA.
Dr. Aston grew up in Lake Orion, MI and began playing the trumpet at age ten. His teachers have included Terry Everson, Alan Siebert, Philip Collins, and Jeff Piper.
Spencer is an avid runner and is currently training for the 2012 San Diego Marathon. He has also recently completed his SCUBA diver certification and looks forward to many new underwater adventures.

Dr. Bishop's primary area of research is American music, particularly the vernacular and regional practices, as well as the processes and historical forces behind the creation of the various strands of music that present as uniquely American. Her masters thesis focused on the financial support systems for American composers. Her dissertation, The Roots and Influences of the Everly Brothers, examines the life and work of this first successful vocal duo of the rock n roll era. She recently presented a portion of the research at the Society for American Music conference. Bishop also maintains an active interest in the music of Hawaii, and has presented papers at national conferfences of the Society for Ethnomusicology in addition to writing entries for the next edition of the Grove Dictionary of American Music.

Maryte Bizinkauskas began her operatic vocal training at the Boston Conservatory of Music where she graduated with a Bachelor of Music in Opera Performance under the guidance of John Moriarty and Iride Pilla. She acquired her Master of Music in Opera Performance under the tutelage of Boris Goldovsky at the esteemed Curtis Institute of Music and National Winner of the Metropolitan Opera Auditions. She performed in concert at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City and went on to apprentice at the Santa Fe Opera. She has performed leading roles at the Vilnius Opera and Kaunas Music Theater in Lithuania and performed lead roles in German and Canada. She has been a guest artist with the Kaunas Philharmonic Orchestra, South Jersey Symphony, Brockton Symphony and Boston Bel Canto Opera.
Her most recent performances include an October benefit concert for the Knights of Lithuania New England District Scholarship Fund and a benefit concert for the Baltic-American Society of New England.
Ms. Bizinkauskas teaches Voice Class I and Voice Class II as well as Performance Studies Voice at Bridgewater. She is also a member of the Bridgewater State University Music Scholarship Committee.
Ms. Bizinkauskas follows the lead of her father, the late Dr. Peter A. Bizinkauskas, at Bridgewater State University, where he ran the Reading Lab for 20 years. Her sister, Veronica (Bizinkauskas) Cote is a faculty member of the Aviation Department at Bridgewater. Her other family members include her mother Veronica, a retired nurse, daughter Vilija, who studies in the Coordinated Program in Nutrition at Framingham State University, Dr. Paul Bizinkauskas of Hyannis, Attorney Peter M. Bizindauskas of Duxbury and the late Andrew Bizinkauskas of Weymouth.

James Bohn is a composer and video artist, who has served as a guest artist at the 7-11 festival in Urbana, Illinois, and at "Most Significant Bytes 2002" in Akron, Ohio. He has had his video works presented at "Most Significant Bytes 2000," at the "MAXIS festival of Sound and Experimental Music," at "MEDiA CIRCU[it]S," at the "Florida Electro-Acoustic Music" Festival, and on the Los Angeles area television program "The New Composers 27 Minute Companion." His music appears on several recording labels: Capstone, The Experimental Music Studios, Frog Peak, and The Media Cafe. James has received commissions from the Bonk Festival, the University of Illinois School of Music, The College of Visual and Performing Arts at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and the Boston and Chicago Chapter of the American Composer's Forum.
As a scholar, James is a regular reviewer for the Computer Music Journal. He has also given papers at conferences for the American Musical Instrument Society, the Association for Technology in Music Instruction, Technological Directions in Music Learning, the MAXIS festival, and the American Chemical Society. His book on Lejaren Hiller (the first composer to write a piece of music using a computer) is published by Edwin Mellen Press.

After graduating from UMass Lowell, Roy toured for two years wih the stage orchestra for "Milton Berle's Vaudeville Tour." He returned to Boston to play for Concerts in Black and White, the Handel Haydn Society, and Boston Pops "Adventures in Music" under Newton Wayland. He became second trombonist with the Boston Opera Company under Sarah Caldwell and house trombonist for the Colonial Theater. Roy was also house trombonist for the Cape Cod Melody Tent and performed frequently with the South Shore Music Circus, the North Shore Music Circus, and the Braintree and Saugus Chateau de Ville. For several years he performed as principal tronmbonist with the L.A. Opera A La Carte on their New England tours. Roy is presently principal trombonist with the Cape Cod Symphony. Other orchestras Roy has been or is a member of are the Simon Symphony, the Indian Hill Symphony, The Nashua Symphony, the Manchester Symphony, and the New Bedford Symphony. He has conducted shows for Bridgewater State University, Ohio State University at their summer home on the Cape (the Monomoy Theater) at the Harwich Jr. Theater, and Sandwich High.
Roy's teaching positions have included Brown University, Norwood High School, Weymouth High, Dennis/Yarmouth Regional, South Shore Conservatory, and Cape Cod Conservatory. As pianist, Roy is accompanist for Leslie Loosli, a frequent soprano recitalist and formerly a performer of opera in New York.

Spanish violinist Miguel Perez-Espejo Cardenas leads a musical career that has taken him to concertize as soloist, recitalist and chamber musician internationally. He has released CD recordings with the label of the Spanish National Radio, RTVE MUSICA, and performed numerous times live in radio and television to enthusiastic reviews from press and audiences alike.
Together with his wife, outstanding Taiwanese violinist and teacher Hsin-Lin Tsai, he performs in the acclaimed L'Etoile Violin Duo, for whom distinguished Spanish composer Jose Zarate wrote his Little Nice Pieces.

Rachel Daly received her Bachelor of Music degree from the Manhattan School of Music in horn performance and Master of Arts degree from Columbia University, Teachers College in music education. She studied horn under David Jolley, William Brown, Laura Klock and George Lessard. Rachel also studied conducting with Dino Anagnost.
Specializing in chamber music, Rachel is a founding member of Hornithology Ensemble and the Lakeside Brass Quintet performing recitals and private and coporate functions. Hornithology Ensemble received many grants over the last two years from the Massachusetts Cultural Council for school, summer and community programs. An active freelancer in the New England area, Rachel has performed with many area orchestras and chamber groups including the Civic Symphony Orchestra of Boston, Plymouth Philharmonic, New Bedford Symphony, Symphony by the Sea, Claflin Hill Symphony and Charles River Sinfonietta.
Rachel, a native of southeastern Massachusetts, is deeply committed to music education, teaching horn and coaching chamber music to area middle and high school students. Her students regularly participate in the Southeast and Central District Music Festivals,,, Massachusetts All Sttae Festival, All Eastern Music Festival, Rhode Island Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, Worcester Youth Symphony, boston Yout Symphony Orchestra and New England Conservatory Preparatory Groups. Along with a home studio, Rachel teaches at lesson programs at Hopkinton High School and King Philip High School. Rachel is an artist affiliate and educational speciallist for United Musical Instruments.

Martina Ferrante currently serves the Bridgewater State University Music Department as a private and class voice instructor. She has performed throughout New England as soloist with the New Bedford Symphony, Plymouth Philharmonic, Brockton Symphony, and Quincy Symphony orchestras. For over a decade she sang under the direction of Sarah Caldwell with the Opera Company of Boston and toured with Opera New England. Appearances also include recitals and oratorio with regional choral groups.
Ms. Ferrante has also directed several church choirs in the Plymouth area and is currently the choir director at the Mayflower Congregational Church in Kingston, MA. She has taught voice at Eastern Nazarene College and in the Plymouth, Brockton, and Rockland public schools. She studied voice with Donna Roll and participated in master classes with Eleanor Steber, Arrigo Polo, and Laurie Fisher.

Israeli-born cellist Guy Fishman made his Symphony Hall solo debut in 2005 with the Handel & Haydn Society Orchestra, which he joined in 2002 as their youngest principal player. That same year he joined Boston Baroque, and since that time he has been in demand as an early music specialist in the United States and Europe, performing in recital and with Apollo's Fire, Emmanual Music, the Boston Museum Trio, and El Mundo, as well as performing on standard cello with the Orchestra of St. Luke's, The Mark Morris Dance Group, and the Albany Symphony Orchestra, among others. Recent highlights include a recital at Jordan Hall with Dawn Upshaw and Gilbert Kalish and performances at the Colorado Music Festival in Boulder. In addition, Mr. Fishman has toured and recorded with Natalie Merchant. He has performed in chamber music recitals in Boston's Sanders Theater, Carnegie's Weill Recital Hall, and Merkin concert hall, and has appeared at Tanglewood, Kneisel Hall, Chautauqua, and Musicorda festivals. He was a member of the New Fromm Players at Tanglewood, principal cellist of the New York String Orchestra at Carnegie Hall, and has performed in fringe recitals at the Boston Early Music Festival. His playing has been praised as "plangent" by the Boston Globe, "electrifying" by the New York Times, and "beautiful...noble" by the Boston Herald.
Mr. Fishman started playing the cello at age 12 and at 16 began his baccalaureate studies with David Soyer at the Manhattan School of Music. He subsequently worked with Peter Wiley, Julia Lichten, and Laurence Lesser, with whom he completed doctoral studies at the New England Conservatory of Music. In addition, Mr. Fishman is a Fulbright Fellow and, as such, worked with the famed Dutch cellist Anner Bylsma in Amsterdam. Mr. Fishman has recorded for the Centaur, Telarc, Titanic, and Newport Classics labels. He plays a rare cello made in Rome in 1704 by David Tecchler, and an anonymous Bohemian instrument from the early 19th century.

Dr. G. Fredrick Guzasky (Grigory F. Gusevsky) is an adjunct professor at Bridgewater State University. He was previously an Affiliated Artist at MIT in Cambridge for ten years. As a recitalist, he has performed in New England and the Midwest, as well as Russia, Latvia, and England, receiving the Boston University Outstanding Performance Award and the EMACT Award in conducting. Highlights of more recent seasons include tours of Russia and Latvia, with engagements at the Cathedral of Riga, the Kapella Concert Hall in St. Petersburg, Russia, as well as teaching master classes at the St. Petersburg Conservatory. Other venues have included performances at St. Paul's Cathedral, Holy Trinity Church in New York, the Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio, Boston's Old North Church and King's Chapel.
As a composer, he has to his credit several Masses, numerous choral anthems, including a series based on Russian Orthodox texts, and a number of instrumental works. Dr. Guzasky is also author of the Gregorian Chant Handbook, a mystery novel, Gradus Ad Parnassum for the Organist, and soon to be available is a collection entitled Rheinberger, the Master from Liechtenstein: Music for the Organ Student.
Dr. Guzasky has done extensive research on the organ works of Josef Rheinberger and is a founding member of the Rheinberger Foundation. Guzasky's recordings include Comes Autumn Time, G. Fredrick Guzasky - LIVE, and Isn't It Romantic.
He has taught at Millikin University, Eastern Illinois University, Boston University, and the Clinton Fine Arts Center. He also served for several years as the director of The Boston Conservatory Satellite School in Cohasset which has developed into The Music Academy-Conservatory Teaching in Your Community, a place where Dr. Guzasky maintains a studio of organ, piano, harpsichord, and cello students. At his current schools, he teaches piano, music theory, music history, Russian studies, and keyboard fundamentals.

Presently, he is on the faculty as both Visiting Lecturer and Staff Accompanist at Bridgewater State University and as Staff Accompanist at UMass Dartmouth. He is Accompanist of the Jubilate Chorale, Bridgewater State University Chorale, and UMass Dartmouth Chorale and Organist at First Baptist Church and Pearl Street United Methodist Church in Brockton. Mr. Hay is the Resident Accompanist for the McClosky Institute of Voice and an accompanist for Mass Theatrica. Mezzo-soprano C. Heather Holland is a graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music with a Master of Music in vocal performance. Ms. Holland has been a soloist with several groups, including The Nashua Symphony, The Concert Singers of Greater Lynn, the South Shore Community Chorus and the Harvard-Radcliff Chorus. She is a regular soloist at the historic King's Chapel in downtown boston and is a soloist and choir member at Temple Shalom in Newton, MA. She sings regularly with the Boston Baroque chorus and the Handel and Haydn Society's Educational Outreach Quartet. She has also been the featured jazz singer at Amazing Things in Framingham, Massachusetts. Additionally, she is on the adjunct faculty at Dean College and has her own private teaching studio in Southborough, MA. In 2002, Ms. Holland was a vocal performance fellow at the Tanglewood Music Festival in Lenox, MA.

Chi-Ju Juliet Lai, clarinet, is an active chamber and orchestral musician, as well as pedagogue. A native of Taiwan who later resided in Hong Kong, she came to America in 1989 to pursue her musical studies. She holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in Clarinet Performance from Boston University, a Master's in Music from Yale University, and a Bachelor's in Music from Rice University. She also attended Interlochen Arts Academy and is an alumna of Blossom Music Festival, Aspen Music Festival, and Eastern Music Festival. Her teachers include Thomas Martin, David Shifrin, Deborah Chodacki, Phillip Rehfeldt and David Peck.
Since coming to Boston in 1999, Miss Lai has been an active freelancer and has appeared in performances with many local as well as national and international orchestras, including Charleston Symphony Orchestra, Tyrol Symphony Orchestra in Austria, and local orchestras such as Cape Symphony Orchestra, New Bedford Symphony Orchestra, Glenn Fall Symphony, Gardner Chamber Orchestra, Eastern Connecticut Symphony and ALEA III. As an avid chamber musician, Miss Lai is a founding member of Boston Octet and Anemoi Quintet. Previously, she appeared with the United Woodwind Quintet in a concert tour to Japan where she also taught masterclasses. She is also a former member of Xanthos Ensemble, a contemporary chamber ensemble.
Miss Lai is currently the clarinetist in Vento Chiaro and the second/assistant clarinetist in Atlantic Symphony Orchestra. She is a faculty at Phillips Exeter Academy, College of the Holy Cross and Bridgewater State University. As a member of Vento Chiaro, she is also an artist-in-residence at Boston University Tanglewood Institute (BUTI) and at The Rivers School Conservatory.

Mr. Leschishin, a native of Ohio, attended Baldwin-Wallace College with scholarships to pursue voice performance. After graduation with high honors, Taras performed with the Cleveland Opera Company as well as soloist for several local choral groups and bass soloist at Old Stone Church in downtown Cleveland. After one year, Taras continued his studies with scholarships at New England Conservatory in Boston, Massachusetts. There he studied with Helen Hodam, renowned voice teacher from Oberlin Conservatory, and he also worked with John Moriarty who is well-known in the New England opera world. After receiving a Masters degree in Voice Performance, Mr. Leschishin began performing around the Boston area, including solos with the Boston Pops, Boston Cecilia, Chorus of the Arts and several other local music organizations. Taras has been a member of the Handel Haydn Society, the Cantata Singers, and the Serephim Singers. He has coached with Martin Katz, Phyllis Curtin and Stephen Lord. Taras' musical experience has brought him to conduct the Hong Kong Philharmonic in Bali, Indonesia as well as be the soloist for the Geddy Wedding in Indonesia with the Hong Kong Philharmonic. Mr. Leschishin has traveled throughout Europe and the Middle East as soloist with many choral groups. Taras has been a guest lecturer and professor of music for the Ukranian Catholic University in Lviv, Ukraine. Taras lives in Roslindale, Massachusetts where he maintains his own home voice studio and is celebrating 20 year of teaching at Bridgewater State University.

Elana Lorance received a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and a Master's of Education degree with a concentration in Curriculum and Instruction within the Creative Arts from Lesley University. In 2001, Ms. Lorance joined the staff of the Norwood Public Schools as an instrumental music teacher, and is responsible for the instrumental program in three elementary schools. In addition to her school schedule, Ms. Lorance founded and directs an extra-curricular town-wide honor band. The Norwood Public Schools Fifth Grade Honor Band has received numerous awards and medals at state festivals and has been a featured ensemble at the Massachusetts All-State Music Conference, both in concert and clinic.
Ms. Lorance has studied oboe with UMASS faculty member Fred Cohen, Frank Charnley of the Boston Ballet, and most recently Barbara Lafitte of the Boston Ballet and Boston Pops. An active freelance musician in the Greater Boston area, Ms. Lorance is equally comfortable playing musical theater as she is with classical repertoire. She has played over 75 musicals with area theater companies and is currently in her ninth season with the Metropolitan Wind Symphony, where she plays pricipal chair. Ms. Lorance has been a featured soloist with the Symphony in 2004 and again in 2012.

Vladan Milenkovic received a classical piano training in former Yugoslavia since his early childhood. He also developed an interest in jazz and improvised music from an early age. While studying biology at the University of Belgrade, Vlad led his acclaimed jazz trio in former Yugoslavia before receiving a scholarship to study jazz composition at Berklee College of Music in Boston in 1991. After spending some years working as a freelance performer and a music instructor in Boston, he completed his Master's degree in Jazz Pedagogy at University of Northern Iowa, and is currently on faculty at Augsburg College in Minneapolis.
A powerful pianist with prodigious imagination and refined technique, Vlad merges acoustic and electronic mediums into emotionally charged sound-images, which range from beautifully austere to exuberant to fairy-tale like. The depth of his music can be overwhelming. His compositions often transcend categorization, bringing together vocabularies of various cultures and epochs, East and West, jazz and classical, ancient and postmodern, groove and silence, Balkan roots and electronica beats. He performed or recorded with many known and unknown musicians from various music cultures, including Jeff Coffin, Anthony Cox, Peter Erskine, Antonio Sanchez, Matthew Garrison, Ben Monder, and Dave King.

Vocalist and conductor, Ed Milham currently serves on the faculties of Bridgewater State University and the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth, teaching various general studies courses, voice class and studio voice. He also teaches private students at the Franklin School for the Performing Arts and serves as Choirmaster at Trinity Episcopal Church in Wrentham.
An active concertizer, he has performed as a vocalist with LiveARTS, the Franklin Performing Arts Company, the Lowell Opera Company, the Merrimack Valley Broadway Ensemble, the Savoyard Light Opera Company, the Newport Music Festival and the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra. As a conductor, he served as the Interim Director of the Bridgewater State University Alumni Choir, has worked as music director in several area churches, and has taught conducting clinics for the Unitarian Universalist Musicians Network. He has toured in Russia and Eastern Europe, and Scotland and England.
In addition to his vocal and conducting activities, Mr. Milham is a multi-instrumentalist, composer and arranger. A dedicated computer geek, he serves as Information Provider for the Bridgewater State University Music Department. He also does extensive work in the field of graphic design and digital printing.

Israeli born flutist Amir Milstein has established his career in the world-music scene, founding acknowledged ensembles such as Bustan Abraham and Tucan Trio which he has recorded and performed worldwide.
His musical background represents a variety of styles and cultures including classical, jazz, Meditteranean, Balkan and Latin music. He has led numerous ensembles and collaborated with world renowned artists such as Zakir Hussein, Tito Puente, Hariprasad Chaurasia, Ross Daly, Omar Farouk Tekbilek, Armandinho Macedo, Theodosii Spasov and Mikhalis Nikoloudis, among others.
Amir has performed as a band leader in distinguished concert venues and festivals around the world, including The Royal Albert Hall, London; Carnegie Hall, NY; Teatre de La Ville, Paris; Cairo Opera House, Egypt; Montreal Jazz Festival, Canada; WOMAD festival, Reading, UK; Europa Plus Jazz Festival, St. Petersburg, Russia; Lille Opera House, France; Jerusalem Festival of Arts; Hong Kong Festival of Asian Arts; etc.
His flute playing is featured in over forty albums worldwide, collaborating with artists from different genres.
Amir has also collaborated with several choreographers, with whom he has composed for various dance groups, including the Israeli Flamenco Dance Company "Compas," Tanzquartier Wien, Austria, and has recently been a member of the experimental group "Sounds and Signs" which explores the interdisciplinary art of free improvisation in music and dance. In 2009 Amir co-composed, together with Grammy-Award-winner pianist Alon Yavnai, the soundtrack for the documentary film Democracy's Outpost.
As a music educator, Amir has been a faculty member at Hed College of Contemporary Music in Tel Aviv, Israel since 2002. He has developed a music-education program for Karev Educational Foundation, and currently presents workshops and clinics at schools, colleges, and universities including Berklee College of Music; Darmouth College, NH; Berkeley University, CA; Harlem School of Music, NY; Middlebury College, VT; and Tel Aviv University, Israel. In 2003, he was nominated for the Excellence in Performance Award of the Israeli Culture Ministry, and in 2010 received a New England Conservatory Entrepeneurial Musicianship Grant.
Amir also presents an educational music program entitled "A World of Flutes," in which a collection of over a hundred woodwind instruments from around the world are introduced through live music, stoires, and other interactive activities. The program is approved by the Newton Schools Creative Arts Committee, and presented in schools and colleges.
Amir currently teaches flute and world music ensembles at the New England Conservatory and Northeastern University in Boston, and performs with a variety of musicians worldwide.

Jerome Mouffe is a virtuoso guitarist from Belgium who has dazzled international audiences with his passionate and spontaneous playing. Jerome has toured throughout the United States and Western Europe as a soloist and chamber musician. Recent performances include recitals for the Omni Concert Series in San Francisco, the New York Classical Guitar Society Second Sunday Series, the Guitar Society of Northeastern Pennsylvania, the MIT Little Kresge auditorium, the International Brusssels Guitar Festival, and Boston Guitar-Fest, among others. In November 2009, Jerome was invited to perform at the Agustin Barrios Mangore Festival in Brussels, where he shared the stage with his mentor, Eliot Fisk, in addition to performing his own solo recital at the prestigious Flagey concert hall. His performances were broadcast on Belgian national public radios Musiq3 and Klara. In March 2011, Jerome performed Rodrigo's celebrated Concierto de Aranjuex with the Orquesta Filarmonica de Sonora conducted by Hector Reyes, in Mexico.
In May 2012, Jerome graduated with a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the New England Conservatory of Boston. His doctoral dissertation analyzes how collaboration between composer and soloist achieved an optimization of the guitar's capabilities in Robert Beaser's Guitar Concerto (2009). His other research interests include improvisation practices and operatic influences in early nineteenth century guitar repertoire. Jerome was invited to teach master classes or lecture at various universities including San Jose State University (CA), University of Wisconsin Milwaukee (WI), Acadia University (Canada), Dalhousie University (Canada), University of Sonora (Mexico), and Music Conservatopia.
Jerome has released his debut CD Capriccio on the VGo Recordings label in 2009. The album features early nineteenth century virtuoso Italian music. It includes caprices by Regondi, Legnani, Castelnuovo-Tedesco and transcriptions of Paganini's famous viloin capricci for solo guitar.
In addition to his career as a soloist, Jerome is an active chamber music performer. He has performed with guitarists Eliot Fisk and Grisha Goryachev, flutist Benjamin Smolen, violinist Emil Altschuler, tenor Gregorio Rangel, and soprano Sarah-Luise Traubel. His Duo Musagete founded with flutist Benjamin Smolen won the New England Conservatory Honors Ensemble prize in fall 2008 and consequently performed a recital in Jordan Hall in spring 2009.
Jerome earned his Master of Music degree magna cum laude at 20 at the Conservatoire Royal de Buxelles, studying with Hugues Navez. He then earned a Postgraduate Diploma at the Universitat Mozarteum Salzburg, studying with the renowned masters Eliot Fisk and Ricardo Gallen. He met and followed the master courses of numerous great musicians including David Russell, Angel Romero, Pepe Romero, Emmanual Rossfelder, Joaquin Clerch, and Pavel Steidl, among others. He also studied flamenco with the Spanish guitarist Antonio Segura in Brussels.

Jacob William is a bass player, composer, improviser and educator.
Born and raised in India, Jacob William has arrived via rare routes to play on the vast fields of jazz and other creatively improvised and composed musics. Jacob grew up in a syncretic milieu, attended parochial school and traveled extensively from a very young age. His earliest years in music were spent singing in choirs and being engaged in informal learning of a wide array of diverse hybrid musics and various instruments. In his teens, Jacob started playing the bass guitar and soon began playing concerts and festivals all over India in the company of many forward looking elder musicians who had a particularly deep interest in jazz. Jacob moved to the U.S. in 1991 after receiving a scholarship to study music.
In 2001, Jacob received a Master of Arts in Music from Wesleyan University, where his studies and work combined ethnomusicology, world-music and experimental composition under the guidance of Anthony Braxton, Neely Bruce, and Alvin Lucier. In the realm of world-music, he also studied South Indian vocal music with T. Viswanathan and percussion music with Ramanad Raghavan and David Nelson. During 1998-1999, he attended the New England Conservatory of Music and studied the bass under Cecil McBee and John Lockwood. From Berklee College of Music he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in 1997 after studying composition and arranging while concentrating on jazz performance. During this time, he also participated in Kenny Werner and Bob Brookmeyer master classes in composition and improvisation. And he privately studied jazz improvisation with John Laporta, Hal Crook and Charlie Banacos.
As an improviser, composer and electric/acoustic bass guitar and double bass player, Jacob has contributed to over 20 recordings, some of which have been released on labels such as Warner, Intuition, and Magnasound, among others. In 2009, Jacob's quartet recording entitled Secondary Deviations was released internationally by Swedish record label Ayler. In 2010, Jacob recorded the music of his Para Quintet and Trio; both collaborative efforts involving drummer Laurence Cook, trumpeter Forbes Graham, drummer Luther Gray, alto saxophonist Jim Hobbs and pianist Steve Lantner. Jacob has also started newer partnerships with alto saxophonist Jorrit Dijkstra, pianist Pandelis Karayorgis and with pianist Eric Zinman - Citizens Orchestra.
Jacob has worked with a diverse range of renowned personalities in jazz and world music arenas, such as Abraham K. Adzenyah, Anthony Braxton, Maynard Ferguson, Joe Hunt, Jay Hoggard, Rudresh Mahanthappa, Charlie Mariano, Gustavo Ovalles, Len 'Boogsie' Sharpe, Omar Sosa, and T. Viswanathan, among many others. Jacob frequently appears in concert halls, festivals, clubs, studios and other venues around the world.
He has also appeared on Indian National Television and Radio DRS (Zurich). Jacob was also founding member of the group J.E.R.M. with which, between 1998 and 2003, he recorded and toured in the U.S. and Europe.
Jacob has composed for a variety of instrumental, vocal and electronic forces and for groups ranging from jazz combos to theater and new music ensembles, including Memories/Ruminations, a ninety minute piece for eighteen assorted instrumentalists. Also, interested in exploring the intersetions of computer aided realtime interactive improvisation and composition, he is currently researching programming/programmable environments.
Jacob has also been involved in introducing music composition to children and youth using open-ended software tools as part of a collaborative initiative between SETC and MIT scientists and educators who are designing, developing, and deploying new and emergent technologies to significantly impact broad ranging learning processes.
Jacob has taught improvisation and composition on the campuses of Williams College and Bennington College, and was a graduate teaching assistant at Wesleyan University. He has also demonstrated and lectured on how to deploy current technologies to enable learning of music in several places, including University of Iowa.

Donald Zook, flutist, made his solo debut at Orchestra Hall in Chicago. He earned his Bachelor of Music from the American Conservatory of Music, where he received the John Conterio Award in recognition of his outstanding ability in performance.
Mr. Zook appears as a soloist and in chamber ensembles throughout New England, the midwest and New York, delighting audiences with his flawless technique, passion, and virtuosity. His frequent performances have included the concert series of the Chicago Artist Association, Harvard University, Endicott College, the Old South Church in Boston, the Morris Museum in New Jersey and the Donnell Library in New York. He was also featured on the 1988-89 Arts Alive Concert Series in the Virgin Islands.
Mr. Zook is a former Vice President and Artist in Residence of the Chicago Flute Society. He has acted as a music consultant for WTTV television studios and has recorded for three major dance studios. An advocate of new music, Mr. Zook has premiered several new works for the flute, winning him critical praise from Chicago and New York reviewers.
Mr. Zook has taught on the faculties of the American Conservatory and the Park Forest Conservatory, and currently teaches on the faculty of the South Shore Conservatory of Music and the Middleboro Public School System.
The department offers a BA in Music, with the option of concentrating in Music Education. We also offer a music minor. A formal audition is required for acceptance into the music major program, and music majors must pass a piano proficiency examination before graduating. Private instruction is given in piano, guitar, voice, and orchestral and band instruments. We also support a variety of performance organizations.
Music majors go on to pursue a range of careers in a variety of fields, including musicology, composition, performance, recording, conducting, arts management and teaching at the primary or secondary level. Musicality can also be beneficial in careers outside of music, such as medicine or law.
