The campus marked Veterans Awareness Day this year with speeches by President Mohler-Faria and others, as well as a flag display, and a general salute to those who currently serve and have served their country.

The event was planned by the members of Kathleen Bailey’s social work course (SCWK 432). The class focuses on community intervention around issues of social justice and activism. This semester, members of the class chose to focus on veterans. “The students wanted to recognize their service and let them know that people cared, were thankful and supportive of them,” said Dr. Bailey, an assistant professor of social work.

Members of class met with veterans enrolled at BSU in order to discover the issues that were relevant to them concerning their return to school after active duty. The feedback received enabled the students to conceive and execute an intervention that would help raise awareness about the number of veteran students currently enrolled at BSU, which is roughly 350. The class, in collaboration with the veterans student group and President Mohler-Faria, is also working toward having a veterans monument installed on campus. It is their hope that veterans on campus will feel included and recognized as significant members of the BSU community.

The veterans event was planned by students Tara Bent, Kristen Croke, Maureen Estes, Kendra Halloran, Katie Hoenigke, Jasmine Jean, Rachelle Martins and Kaylee Mello.
