Raising the Bar (Multimedia)
The transition from high school to college writing was the focus of a panel discussion held at BSU and sponsored by the institution's Writing across the Curriculum committee. More than 90 educators from across the region attended.
The new Common Core State Standards (CCSS), adopted by the commonwealth place new emphasis on writing in a range of genres for a range of purposes in English language arts, mathematics, social studies and science. The goal of this forum was to discuss the impact of CCSS on writing across the curriculum at the secondary school level and what that means for the transition to college level writing.
The discussion was led by WAC assistant coordinator, [b]Dr. Phyllis Gimbel[/b], and featured [b]Dr. Anna Bradfield[/b], dean of BSU's College of Education and Allied Studies; Elizabeth Gonsalves of Abington High School, David Mills of Milton Public Schools, Jeffrey Schoonover, MEd G'11 of the Portsmouth, R.I. school district, [b]Dr. Polina Sabinin[/b], assistant professor of math education at BSU, [b]Dr. Matthew Salomone[/b], assistant professor in BSU's Mathematics Department, and [b]Dr. Michelle Cox[/b], WAC coordinator.
