Twelve graduate students in the counselor education graduate program presented at the Massachusetts School Counselors Association’s spring conference. Their research centered on issues and topics impacting preK-12 education.

Held in Danvers, the conference brought together roughly 400 professional school counselors, principals, superintendents, graduate students, counselor educators, and others for interactive discussions about best practices, prevention and intervention strategies in the classroom. The conference also served as a summit for school districts taking part in the Race to the Top federal grant.

Keynote speakers included Dr. Carol A. Dahir, who helped develop the National Model for School Counseling and the Best Practices for School Counselors models, and Dr. Karla Baehr, retired associate commissioner of the state's Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE).

Themes for the conference focused on the new School Counselor Evaluation Rubric launched this year by DESE, as well as the College and Career Readiness initiative for school counselors and the Massachusetts Model for a Comprehensive School Counseling program.

“All the students did an amazing job and the quality of their work and representation of BSU's program was impressive,” said Dr. Theresa Coogan, assistant professor of counselor education and director for school counseling and fieldwork, who served as faculty advisor.
